Surfin' bird

I've been thinking a lot about the audiences for classical music lately, and what performers and organisers need to do to reach out more. This afternoon I came across this post discussing an article by Randall Thompson on the classical music audience in 1950. Thought-provoking, for sure.

Update: I wrote Randall Thompson, but I meant Virgil Thomson, the friend of Aaron Copland (and part of the so-called gay-fiosi of American music).

That is SUCH a coincidence. I was talking about that very topic just yesterday with a random stranger I met in line at Starbucks. I was talking with Elise Blake (she says HI, by the way! she was visiting Boston briefly from Peabody) and he overheard us and asked sort of rhetorically why our audience is aging all the time. I responded that it is our challenge (or even duty) to find new ways to hook a new, younger audience. So, if you come up with any bright ideas, let me know.
